One of the reasons I enjoy it so much besides getting out for fresh air, is that it brings me to locations I’ve never been before. I get to see things I never noticed before even in my own city. Sometimes I’ll be sitting on the couch trying to figure out what do to enjoy a nice sunny day. Well geocaching is the perfect hobby to get you out of the house and go for a walk.

This weekend me and my wife went geocaching along the coast of Shediac and Cap Pele. It was great fun. My best friend Winston came along for the search.

My favorite thing about geocaching; discovering great sceneries.

One of the caches was hidden in an old man’s yard. His name is Desirée Goguen and he is 84 years old. He invited us into his home to see his collection of toy monkeys. He has 4153 monkeys displayed throughout the house.

Caches are not always easy to find. Even with a GPS.

We were a group of 6 and we all had a GREAT time. It was a great opportunity for me to try the video feature on my Canon 5d Mark II. I used iMovie ‘09 to edit the montage. It’s a great software and very easy to use. It took a long time to put together but with time and experience I think the editing will become easier.

Our stay at the Catalonia Bavaro hotel was amazing. Awesome beach, great food and good times. I would go back any day. Hope you enjoy the video!

We stayed at the Catalonia Bavaro resort. I had every intention to go on excursions and take shots outside the resort, but once I got there I turned into relaxation mode and it just didn’t happen. That didn’t stop me from taking a few photos. It was a really nice resort and I would recommend it to anyone. Me and my wife did go for a long walk outside the resort along the beach. We saw a small town, a few locals and fishermen.

by Patrick Arseneau – I’m finally making the jump to a full frame DSLR. I just ordered the Canon 5D Mark II. Sure I’m pretty happy with the Canon 40D I have now, but I got a chance to play around with someone’s 5D not long ago and I probably shouldn’t have done that. It convinced me to take a chunk out of my budget to get one.

I knew there was a difference between a 1.6 crop (like the 40D) and a full frame sensor but I was still blown away by the margin. Especially with my 16-35mm wide lens. Simply put, cameras with a cropped sensor (most DSLR’s) don’t capture the full width of EF lenses. There are a few reasons for DSLR cameras to have a smaller sensor. Price and size are the two main factors why the market is mostly cropped sensor bodies. Cameras with a full frame sensor are usually bigger, heavier and MUCH more expensive.

The following picture shows the difference between crop and full frame. It also shows why a full frame camera would be useless with an EF-S lens. From that same picture you might also say that an EF lens would be useless with a crop camera but that’s debatable; EF lenses are generally higher quality and much sharper so you still benefit by using them on any camera.

So once I get my hands on the Canon 5D Mark II, I’ll be able to take full advantage of my 16-35mm and 70-200mm lense. Not to mention that it also has full HD video capability. Here’s a nice little review from people who use the 5D:

The century old building which housed a 4 generation family owned restaurant “Le Chateau a Pape” went up in flames in the early hours of Saturday morning. An RCMP officer spotted smoke coming out of the kitchen window while getting ready to leave at the end of his shift. Two hours later firefighters lost the battle to save the structure and could only try to contain the fire from areal towers. This is a sad day for the community and I wish the Gosselin family a good recovery.

I thought I would share a few pictures of the building that I took while shooting a wedding a few months ago.

When I started doing photography, I quickly learned that knowing how to use a camera does not make you a good photographer. The technical part of it is actually just a fraction of the work involved. There is a lot more involved and one of the most important elements is how to interact with your subjects. This is forever going to be a learning curve for me. I feel like I got a lot better than when I first started but it is often difficult to guide your models to match your visions and make them feel comfortable at the same time.

Now imagine if your subject was the Queen of England! Photographer Annie Leibovitz, who photographed more celebrities and politicians than anybody else, got the opportunity to do it. Annie isn’t one to be intimidated by such a challenge. She’s got so much experience and such a good reputation. She has the ability to make her subjects trust her talent.

Shortly after I watched that video, I read this paragraph from Annie’s wikipedia article that I thought should be mentioned:

In 2007, The BBC misrepresented a portrait shooting by Leibovitz of Queen Elizabeth II to take the queen’s official picture for her state visit to Virginia. This was filmed for the BBC documentary A Year with the Queen. A promotional trailer for the film showed the Queen reacting angrily to Leibovitz’s suggestion (“less dressy”) that she remove her tiara, then a scene of the Queen walking down a corridor, telling an aide “I’m not changing anything. I’ve had enough dressing like this, thank you very much.”[12] The BBC later apologised and admitted that the sequence of events had been misrepresented, as the Queen was in fact walking to the sitting in the second scene.[13] This led to a BBC scandal and a shake-up of ethics training. See The Tiaragate Affair.

He talked little bit about a project he started called “Cameras for Healing“. The project aims to help victims of war in Africa by providing psychological therapy through the use of photography. It is a fact that art, weather it is photography, music, painting, etc can be very therapeutic for people who suffer from post traumatic stress.

Maurice decided that he would try to help with the use of the activity he knows best; photography.

Just as Iwas about to head back home, I see in the far distance what seemed to be way too big to be a dog. It was too far to tell and it could’ve been a horse. I walked back home to grab my camera and ventured back on the trail.

It didn’t take long to find out it wasn’t a horse. It was a young moose. Apparently it’s not unusual for mooses to wander in urban areas to escape mosquitoes this time of the year. Not sure how it managed to walk through the residential area and traffic to end up here but it seemed pretty content and happy to be there.

I learned from other people in the neighborhood that the moose had been there all afternoon and it didn’t seem to want to leave. There was a report about it on the radio this morning: “People be advised that if you encounter a moose please be careful, don’t get too close, and do NOT alert the animal or try to scare it.”
