Chalena and her Bike
By Patrick Arseneau – Wow keeping this blog active in the summer is hard. It’s been a busy past few weeks with photos but I’m loving it. The weather hasn’t been really nice but that just gives me more time for editing. Between model shoots, weddings, family shoots, etc, summer is definitely my busiest season.
In this article I wanted to share my experience working with a model. Her name is Chalena Biggar. Chalena has been modeling as a hobby for the past few years. I thought I could use her experience to learn a few things. I don’t get a chance to work with models very often but it’s something that I hope to do more often in the future.
My experience with Chalena has been more than awesome. She’s a natural and I barely had to give her instructions at all. I told her a little bit about what I wanted; angles, positions and where to look, etc, but everything else came natural to her. I learned a lot from the experience and I’m looking forward to work with her again.
I waited till 7:30-8PM for a low July sunlight for these shots. I used the sun for rim light on her hair and one side of the bike. For fill light I used my Canon 430EX Speedlite triggered off camera with my trusty Elinchrom Skyport Trigger
. To match the color of the sunlight I gelled the flash with a 1/2 CTO gel.

In the following shots, I switched the main light to sunlight and used my 430EX flash for rim light.

As the sun was getting lower, I was able to go for more dramatic lighting. In these shots you’ll notice that the background is much darker than my subject. The reason I can’t do that earlier in the day is because my 430EX flash is not powerfull enough to over power the sunlight (ambient light) therefore this can only be done when the sun goes down.

Great work Pat, and very Tastefully done!
